April 2024
As a person with very limited knowledge of the main tenets of theology, it was absolutely fascinating for me to attend the Theology & Film module on Sarum College’s MA in Theology, Imagination & Culture programme.
I attended because I wanted to learn more about how theological questions could be explored and / or reflected in films. The module offers an impressive array of content, including sessions on how Mary is portrayed throughout the history of cinema, the five eras of Jesus movies, how costume design, sound & music, location/setting, colour and cinematography can all be carriers of the theological, Barbie as a feminist film, Bruce Almighty as a theological film, and Edward Bailey’s idea of Implicit Religion.
The Sarum facilitators were warm and welcoming and my fellow students were a brilliant, friendly group of people.
For me, the module was a wonderful, rewarding experience. For anyone interested in the intersectionality between theology and film, this course is for you.
