Sarum College is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Jane Shaw, Principal of Harris Manchester College, to the Sarum College Board of Trustees.
‘I have long admired Sarum College’s innovative approach to adult education: its encouragement of those who are seeking to develop a spiritual life alongside the life of the mind; its engagement with the arts and a wide range of ideas; and its deep sense of community rooted in the cathedral close,’ says Professor Shaw. ‘I very much look forward to serving as a trustee, and to continuing my links with Salisbury in this way.’
‘Jane Shaw is a wise and entrepreneurial priest who brings to the governance of Sarum College a breadth of experience in both academy and church,’ says The Revd Canon Professor James Woodward, Principal of Sarum College. ‘She is especially committed to adult learning and putting theology to work for human flourishing. We look forward to working with her and learning alongside her for this next stage of the life of Sarum College.’
Professor Shaw’s latest book, Pioneers of Modern Spirituality, is based on the lecture series she gave on behalf of Sarum College in 2017. The book considers four Anglicans – Evelyn Underhill, Reginald Somerset Ward, Percy Dearmer, and Rose Macaulay – each of whom was a significant influence in a revived interest in spirituality at a time when people were questioning institutional religion.
Professor Shaw recently took up the post of Principal of Harris Manchester College (which is for mature students) in the University of Oxford, where she is also a Pro Vice-Chancellor and Professor of the History of Religion. She returned to the UK from California last autumn, having been Professor of Religious Studies and Dean for Religious Life at Stanford University and, before that, Dean of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. She is Canon Emerita of Salisbury Cathedral, having been its first Canon Theologian.
