Reading Scripture Together: Who’s Calling? course
The Hebrew Bible contains certain archetypal “type-scenes” – narratives which offer a predictable format (eg birth stories, women at the well betrothals, deathbed blessings, etc).
When one encounters such a type scene, much can be learned from seeing how it conforms – and doesn’t conform – to other similar narratives. In this day, we will read and explore together several “Call Story” type-scenes from the Hebrew Bible (Abraham, Jacob, Moses, Samuel, prophetic callings) to compare and contrast them with each other.
With that analysis in hand, we will then turn to the New Testament stories of Jesus’s and Paul’s callings to see how they draw upon – and differ – from their predecessors.
Reading Scripture Together
This series of conversational one-day courses (some onsite, some online) explores selected sacred texts in detail to consider the ways they have been interpreted, both in the written word and in art, and on their relevance and meaning to us today.
