New perspectives on theology and spirituality

Thinking about further study?

Don’t assume it’s not for you because it’s been awhile since you wrote an essay! Your experience matters and we offer lots of support to develop study skills and academic writing.

Join us at Sarum College for a morning to hear about our programmes, meet programme leaders, current and former students to learn more about the courses and how they might fit your study interests. There also will be an opportunity to tour the College and plenty of time for questions. The morning concludes with lunch.

Sarum College runs postgraduate study programmes validated by the University of Winchester in Christian Spirituality and in Theology, Imagination and Culture. Programme options include a one-year certificate, a two-year diploma and a three-year master of arts degree.

You can tailor postgraduate study programmes in all sorts of ways. If you want to just do a year of study and concentrate on a theme, have a look at some possible pathways, with September or January starting point: specific theme within Christian Spirituality, and in Theology, Imagination and Culture.

Book this session if you’re thinking of a September 2024 or later start date. If this date/time isn’t convenient there is another session on 8 July (online). For a January 2025 or later start, you can join the 18 November online session. Alternatively, contact maadministrator@sarum.ac.uk to arrange a personal visit or online meeting to discuss your interests and study options.

Alternatively, contact us to arrange a personal visit either onsite or online.

Why choose Sarum College for postgraduate study?

  • Our programmes and modules are forward thinking and diverse. We have modules such as Embodied Encounters with the Divine and Erotic Desires: Gender, Sexuality and Spirituality which explore contemporary issues into the study of theology. View the full list of Theology, Imagination and Culture modules and Christian Spirituality modules.
  • We build study skills support into our programmes, so there are lots of opportunities to develop your research and writing skills throughout your time with us. We incorporate study skills sessions into modules and tutors are available for 1-to-1 tutorials at your convenience.
  • Alongside the faculty at Sarum (all active researchers), guest lecturers who are experts and active researchers on the topics they teach are drawn in for each module. So the teaching is always research-led and students benefit from a wide range of lecturers during your time with us.
  • The programmes are flexible and can be slowed up or sped up to suit you. You can take an interruption if you need one. Teaching schedules are designed to fit around working life or other commitments, so you can take up further study without having to give up your job.
  • The schedule of intensive teaching weeks up to three times a year combined with both remote and online learning support means you get a lot of in-person teaching that can fit around busy lives without relocating.

What our students say

Riveting!

Book of Revelation course

Someone on the course said it was ‘riveting!’ This was exactly what I felt. The course was a total joy because of the tutor’s handouts, excellence and Sarum College hospitality.
Mark Oakley

Faith is an imaginative adventure

The Very Revd Dr Mark Oakley

I admire the work and tone of Sarum College very deeply. It is a community that takes theology and spirituality seriously, not as hobbies but as pursuits into understanding, and engaging in, a complex world.

Sarum College reminds us that faith is an imaginative adventure and that it is shaped by a questioning joy.

Vibrant approach to theology

Fr Azariah France-Williams

I’ve been particularly struck by the refreshing approach to theological education here. In a world, and indeed within parts of the church, where faith can sometimes feel stagnant or out of touch, Sarum offers a vibrant and relevant alternative. The courses encourage a bold exploration of profound ideas, connecting with truths that lie beneath the surface and fostering genuine personal growth, which feels particularly significant as I approach my 50th year. This counter-cultural spirit, which embraces depth and challenges ageism and fear, is truly remarkable. Sarum is a place where individuals can be transformed by engaging with a living and breathing faith.

Well worth taking the time

Disability Theology: Theory and Practice

I took time to attend the course out of a busy working week and it was well worth taking that time. I have so many things to ponder and reflect on from this course and a helpful further reading list to keep me going for a few months! Thank you Sarum College

Netflix, Theology and Pastoral Practice

Peter Butchers on his MA in Theology, Imagination and Culture student experience

How do cultural tropes, like those found in Black Mirror, help bridge the gap between what academic theology espouses and what the everyday Christian believes? In his research as a student on the MA in Theology, Imagination and Culture, Peter Butchers explored platonic philosophy, digital theology and eschatology, and pastoral practice around death and dying.

Rewarding Sabbatical Stay

The Revd Greg Syler, is Rector of Ascension & St. George’s, Resurrection Parish in the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, DC USA, spent part of his ministry sabbatical at Sarum College in spring 2022.

His account of the experience begins: ‘I loved spending nearly three weeks of my ministry sabbatical at Sarum College earlier this year.

Not only did I rest, and rest well in the comfortable care of the Sarum College staff, I experienced very significant renewal and fresh insights.’
