Humour in the Bible – The Physical, Absurd and Hyperbolic course
GK Chesterton wrote that those who take everything seriously make an idol of everything, and we are often so serious when we read the Bible!
This series of three evening sessions is an invitation to uncover and appreciate the different comic spirits in the Bible: wordplay, absurdity, hyperbole, satire, subversion, slapstick, and the scatological.
Considering the phenomenon of humour in scripture, we will explore its purpose, the role of context, and its relationship to truth-telling. And we’ll do all of this with a view to coming to a greater understanding of a theology of the comic, using film, art, and – of course – the Bible!
Note about the the series:
The sessions will be recorded so you can catch up with what you missed if you are unable to attend any of the three sessions. The other two dates are: 10 June 2024 7-9pm and 24 June 2024 7-9pm.
