About the Everything happens for a reason? A Rough Guide To…. The Doctrine of Providence course
A common response to questions about why things are the way things are is ‘everything happens for a reason’.
This half-day online course explores to what extent this widespread belief has anything to do with a Christian doctrine of providence – an understanding of the world as enfolded in and guided by God’s loving care.
This course is for those who may not have had chance to reflect deeply on providence before, or those who would like a refresher. We will explore the Christian imagination of God that shapes understandings of the progress of history, reflecting on what this might mean for our responses to the environmental crisis.
We will also reflect on the pastoral questions raised by the doctrine of providence: its effects on prayer, pastoral care and coping with suffering. We will ask what assurance, what hope, what comfort, if any, might be found in a belief in the providence of God.
