Reading Scripture Together: Jews in Royal Courts – Esther course
This online session is the first of a two-part series looking at the theme of biblical Jews in foreign, royal courts.
In this session, we will explore the story of Esther, the secret Jew who wins a king’s beauty pageant and saves of her people from annihilation.
Who was Esther and why did she hide her Jewish identity? How did she exercise leadership and ultimately save her people? What message can we take today from the recurring biblical theme of being a foreigner in a royal court?
We will read the story of Esther together from Jewish and Christian perspectives, consider other representations of this story, and learn from one another about what it means to be living in ‘such a time as this’ (Esther 4:14).
The second session on this theme will be held at Sarum College: Jews in Royal Courts – Joseph on 20 November. The two sessions can be taken independently of one another.
