About the Reading Scripture Together: Money and Faith course
Rich Man, Lazarus, Pharisee and the Tax Collector
This online day will explore two stories told by Jesus: the Rich Man and Lazarus, and the Pharisee and Tax Collector.
These stories in Luke 16:19-31; 18:9-14, 18-30 are often interpreted as teaching to be humble about one’s faith and to not rely on earthly positions for heavenly reward, but are also often used as fodder for negatively stereotyping Jewish people in relation to money and faith practices.
What was Jesus really saying when he shared these stories with his followers, and how might we read these texts in a way that makes sense without perpetuating the legacy of anti-semitism that unhelpful interpretations have fueled by for centuries?
