Dr Eleanor McLaughlin, programme leader for Sarum’s Theology, Imagination and Culture programmes, discusses the idea of unconscious Christianity as conceived by the late German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer in the Bonhoeffer Podcast on 8 April 2021.
In the podcast, host Corey Tuttle and McLaughlin discuss her research that led to an articulation of Bonhoeffer’s ideas in her book, Unconscious Christianity in Bonhoeffer’s Late Theology: Encounters with the Unknown Christ (Lexington Books/Fortress Academic, 2020).
McLaughlin suggests that Bonhoeffer’s association with people who act compassionately led him to believe that they were Christian even if they did not identify themselves as such, and that the Church can learn from these ideas to make sense of the contemporary context.
